COVID 19 Update #7 (December 11, 2020)

GALA Reopening Plan, 2020-2021

GALA will begin in-person learning on January 25, 2021, as long as  Cuyahoga County is at risk Level 1-3 (yellow, orange, and red) for 4 consecutive weeks. This means if Cuyahoga County is at risk level 4 (purple) after December 14, GALA’s in-person start date will be delayed.

*The first day of school, upon return from winter break, is January 6.  All instruction school-wide will be delivered All-Remote until In-Person learning begins on January 25, 2021.

Below is a summary of GALA’s In-Person and All-Remote Learning models.  Read the full plan, which includes schedules, safety procedures, frequently asked questions, and more by clicking here.

In-Person Learning Model:

  • GALA in-person instruction will be 4 days a week, Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 am -2:00 pm, and 1 day a week (Fridays) All-Remote
  • A schedule of staggered arrival and departure times will be in place to ensure safe arrival and dismissal of our school community.
  • For in-person learning all students will learn online and have the support of the classroom teacher to assist them with their work in the classroom. Students must bring their Chromebook, chargers, and headphones with a mic with them to school daily.

All-Remote Learning Model:

  • The remote learning program will consist of both synchronous and asynchronous instruction throughout the day. Overall, the same remote learning model that has been in place for the first half of the 2020-21 school year (Monday through Thursday live class sessions, asynchronous assignments, and flexible Fridays).  See description of All Remote Learning at: https://galacleveland.org/remote-learning/
  • Students will engage in zoom sessions by participating in the curriculum daily when teachers are providing in-person learners with instruction.
  • Students will also have independent work to complete and be engaged in one-on-one or small group meetings with teachers, at assigned times for further assistance.

We are aware that some families may choose to have their child attend school remotely, GALA will continue to offer remote-learning option as well.

  • Families who registered their student(s) for In-Person learning, can later elect to have their child attend All-Remote learning. Families can switch to All-Remote at any time; however, once the child is in All-Remote, the student will need to remain All-Remote for the remainder of the school year.
  • Families who registered their student(s) for All-Remote learning will not have the opportunity to switch to In-Person for the remainder of the school year.

COVID-19 Update #6 (November 4, 2020)

Dear GALA Parents,

Thank you for your patience and trust in us through this time.

The Return to School Committee has revised its plan for conditions for in-person learning to include Risk Level Red.  At Risk Level Red, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health recommends consideration for remote learning, but does not recommend closure. After much consideration, we have decided to offer an in-person learning option to our students and families (all remote will continue to also be available), and we are prepared to make this in-person learning opportunity within a safe school environment.  For your reference, GALA’s revised decision-making framework is provided below (the full Safety, Sanitization and Closure Procedures are on the GALA website – please be advised that this document continues to be updated).

Starting on Monday, January 11th, GALA will offer in-person learning for 4 days a week, Monday through Thursday from 9:00am to 3:30pm. The current class groups and teacher assignments will remain the same, however the school-wide schedule will be altered by pushing everything back by 30 minutes (i.e. SEL Morning meetings will begin at 9:00am, lunch will begin at 11:30am, etc.) to accommodate time needed for health entrance screening into the building.  Fridays will continue to serve as flexible days that are used primarily for enrichment and finishing assignments.

Whether students continue to learn remotely, or choose to attend in-person learning, there will be little disruption to learning as we transition into January.  For students that are learning in the building, they will benefit from having their teacher to support them directly and during asynchronous learning time. All students will continue to receive the same instructional materials and assignments.

Please submit the student registration form by Friday, November 13.  This form is required and one form per student must be submitted. In-Person spots are LIMITED due to social distancing requirements (there will be no more than 15 students in a classroom). Registration Form: https://forms.gle/NMU1HL5anRFrA1za6

We know that you probably have many questions related to schedule details, safety and closure procedures, room assignments, substitute teaching, etc. Please know that we need student registration numbers in order to finalize the in-person learning plan. We will be sharing the final plan before Thanksgiving break.

As always, be well and be safe.

Sincerely,

GALA Return to School Committee

GALA’s revised decision-making framework

GALA will rely on the Ohio’s Public Health Advisory System (OPHAS) color-coded system in making school‐wide decisions and recommendations from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health for evaluating and determining Return to School learning options for students. GALA’s Return to School Plan has been revised as follows:

OPHAS Level 1 (Yellow) – Active Exposure and spread. – Along with a recommendation from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health that supports in-person school, GALA will provide two learning options:  In-person with an opt out option of Remote; while adhering to public health sanitation and social distancing measures as outlined in Ohio’s School Reopening Guidance.

OPHAS Level 2 (Orange) – Increased exposure and spread. Exercise high degree of caution. – Along with a recommendation from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health that supports in-person school, GALA will provide two learning options:In-person with an opt out option of Remote; while adhering to public health sanitation and social distancing measures as outlined in Ohio’s School Reopening Guidance.

OPHAS Level 3 (Red) – Very high exposure and spread. Limit activities as much as possible. – Along with a recommendation from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health that supports in-person school, GALA will provide two learning options: In-person with an opt out option of Remote; while adhering to public health sanitation and social distancing measures as outlined in Ohio’s School Reopening Guidance.

OPHAS Level 4 (Purple) – Severe exposure and spread. Only leave home for supplies and services. – GALA will provide an All Remote learning option for all students, with no in‐person instruction provided during this period of time.

GALA COVID-19 Update #5 (August 7, 2020)

Dear GALA Families:

After careful consideration, the GALA Return to School Committee, consisting of members of the school administration, teachers, and parent representatives have determined that GALA must begin the 2020-21 school year operating fully All Remote through the end of December 2020

We believe that opening remotely provides the best option in the current environment for GALA’s children, families, and staff by prioritizing the school community’s health and safety while delivering on our mission to educate our students.

The Return to School Committee made this decision based on a number of factors, including:

  • the recommendation from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health that schools begin the 2020-21 school year remotely “due to the elevated health risk posed to students, staff and family members”;
  • the updated state mandate that all K-12 children wear face coverings while at school, and what this would mean for students trying to learn the target language through masks, especially younger children;
  • the news that several schools around the country, which have already begun the school year, facing positive test cases among their students and staff; and
  • the changing comfort level of some families and staff with the continued higher risk of infection in the county.

The recommendation by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health results in the need for our Return To School Plan, currently based on the four levels of the Ohio Public Health Advisory System, to change.  If conditions change in Cuyahoga County prior to the start of the school year and the Cuyahoga County Board of Health modifies their recommendation, GALA will reevaluate our plan and may adjust accordingly.  GALA’s Return to School Plan has been revised as follows:

OPHAS Level 1 (Yellow) Active Exposure and spread. – Along with a recommendation from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health that supports in-person school, GALA will provide two learning options: Hybrid and All Remote; while adhering to public health sanitation and social distancing measures as outlined in Ohio’s School Reopening Guidance.

OPHAS Level 2 (Orange) Increased exposure and spread. Exercise high degree of caution. – Along with a recommendation from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health that supports in-person school, GALA will provide two learning options: Hybrid and All Remote; while adhering to public health sanitation and social distancing measures as outlined in Ohio’s School Reopening Guidance.

OPHAS Level 3 (Red) Very high exposure and spread. Limit activities as much as possible. – GALA will provide an All Remote learning option for all students, with no in‐person instruction provided during this period of time.

OPHAS Level 4 (Purple) Severe exposure and spread. Only leave home for supplies and services. – GALA will provide an All Remote learning option for all students, with no in‐person instruction provided during this period of time.

We will be discussing GALA’s Remote learning plan, collaboratively developed by the GALA Return to School Committee, at the upcoming GALA Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, August 19th at 5:30PM

Additionally, GALA will host two virtual back to school orientations for all parents.  Please mark your calendars for the following times:

  • Tuesday, August 25th at 5:00pm – 6:00pm for parents of incoming kindergarten students
  • Thursday, August 27th at 5:00pm to 6:00pm, for parents of students in grades 1-5

A recording of the virtual orientation sessions will be shared to all families in case you are unable to attend the live session.

Lastly,  “All Remote” supply lists will be shared next week, and dates and times for chromebook distribution will be shared later this month.

We know this is very frustrating and stressful for the families who were relying on sending their children back to the school buildings this fall, and you probably have many more questions now that our plans have shifted.

We will continue to work together to provide the best learning experience possible for each and every student, and will continue to share information with you regularly.  As you’ve witnessed by recent events, things change very quickly.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate these truly challenging and unique times.

As always, be well and be safe.

Sincerely,

GALA Return to School Committee
